Twente campuses flywheel for growth and innovation
Technology Base newcomer in ‘developing’ campus category
Campuses and science parks are essential for job growth and new business activity in the Netherlands. Innovations and innovative collaborations result in solutions that accelerate social transitions. So says the published research report by Buck Consultants International (BCI). The report included three Twente campuses. Kennispark was identified as a mature campus, High Tech Systems Park as a growth campus and Technology Base as a newcomer in the development campus category.
Increase in number of companies and employment
The number of companies at Technology Base has more than tripled in recent years (from 8 to 26) and employment has also increased significantly (from 81 to 227). Just over a third of the companies are spin-offs. The number of start-ups lags behind, according to the report. However, establishing start-ups is not a goal of Technology Base either. The facilities are lacking for that and the real estate is not suitable for that either. The real estate at the former military airbase lends itself to housing companies that are at an advanced stage of development.
Ton van Snellenberg, Technology Base director: ‘In this way, a nice relationship is growing with Kennispark in particular and the development of start-ups there. Some of the start-ups are looking for more space and fit in well with Technology Base's profile (especially HTSM and AMM), think of 4Silence, Demcon Suster, Spiral and Mecal. This creates throughput and it ensures that companies at every stage of their development can find a place in Twente. In this way, we retain talent and, as a result of the growth opportunities, we also attract new talent.’
Attractive business climate
Kennispark (mature campus), High Tech Systems Park (growth campus) and Technology Base, make Twente an attractive business location region. That the campuses are a breeding ground for start-ups that grow into scale-ups and are a magnet for knowledge workers, talent and technology-driven companies and capital, the figures from all three campuses confirm.
