Twente Airport celebrates its fifth anniversary!
On Thursday 30 March 2017, Twente Airport was officially opened for business and small recreational air traffic. In the presence of Sharon Dijksma, state secretary for infrastructure and the environment, the Ministry of Defence formally transferred authority to the province of Overijssel. This was the beginning of a new chapter in the rich history of Twente Airport.
Since its opening, Twente Airport has become a unique location for aviation-oriented activity, such as AELS dismantling end-of-life large aircraft and TKH Airport Solutions developing pioneering LED solutions for airports.
In the combination of flying, establishing and testing, Twente Airport is an important part of Technology Base, the testing ground for pioneering companies. Parties such as Twente Safety Campus, Space53, Dynteq and NLR have regularly used the closed test and demo environment provided by Twente Airport and Technology Base over the past five years. After several years of disappointing financial results, a new future perspective for Twente Airport was developed last year. A decision will be taken on this in 2022. By strengthening its function as a test airport, increasing business traffic and parking in combination with simple maintenance, among other things, there are opportunities to make the airport profitable.
Saturday 2 April fly-in
To mark the five-year anniversary, a special fly-in will be organised on Saturday 2 April 2022 from 10 am to 4 pm. Some 60 aircraft from flying clubs across the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium will drop by to celebrate the anniversary with us.
