To make the Challenge as representative as possible, Rijkswaterstaat staged an incident: a ship collision with a drowning person, fallen cargo and an oil spill.

High-tech applications

Roger Borre of Robor Electronics/DRONExpert.nl explains to Dronewatch.nl: ‘We met this challenge by equipping the drones with all kinds of high-tech gadgets, such as automatic obstacle avoidance. This allows the drones to see other drones and obstacles and react to them themselves. In addition, the drones can also take off and land autonomously. In doing so, they can also automatically image the ‘incident scene’ and place special tags (beacons that emit a signal with GPS coordinates). We did this on the container. The dangerous object half underwater is then immediately visible online to other shipping.’
