Oehoe successfully raises at least two young
The annual flora & fauna monitoring carried out by Eelerwoude has shown that the eagle owl has nested on the grounds of Twenthe Airport Event Location and has successfully raised at least two young here. The eagle owl occurs in a wide variety of habitats, but mainly in places where robust nature is present. The rugged landscape of the former Twenthe airbase appears to be suitable as a habitat for the rare eagle owl.
The eagle owl is among the largest owls in the world and is about twice the size of the long-eared owl. Few eagle owls breed in the Netherlands, which makes its settlement special. Its presence indicates that there is robust nature here and apparently enough to eat. People need not worry; the eagle owl is very shy and will fly away at the slightest disturbance. Adult eagle owls are site-bound and usually occupy the same territory, which can be several kilometres in size, throughout their lives. Young eagles wander off as soon as they can obtain food independently.
We are therefore delighted that such a special bird species as the eagle owl has chosen our rugged area as a breeding and settlement site. Of course, together with the province of Overijssel (owner of the nature reserve) and Event location Vliegveld Twenthe, we will continue, as we have been doing for years, to take optimal account of ecology and take the necessary measures to protect the eagle owl, but also all other flora and fauna present in and around the nature reserve.
