Sustainable approach to oak processionary caterpillar
Last summer, many oak processionary caterpillars could be found at Technology Base. A sustainable approach was chosen: 35 nesting boxes for blue tit, great tit and pied flycatcher, among others, were installed all over the site. The proportion of natural (tree) cavities in the still relatively young forest of Technology Base is limited, which means that the caterpillar eaters are less likely to build nests on their own.
The nest boxes were made by the volunteers of the Nature and Bird Working Group ‘De Grutto’.
The results of the project ‘Promoting sustainable management of oak processionary caterpillars through biodiversity in Wapserveen’ (by LTO and others) are positive. The same nest boxes were hung in that research area and the caterpillars caused far fewer oak processionary caterpillars to be present in the following year than in previous years. With this same sustainable and environmentally friendly approach, we hope to see a significant reduction in oak processionary caterpillars and an increase in biodiversity.
