First trees planted on the Usseler Es
Alderman Jurgen van Houdt and Technology Base director Jan Schuring planted the first trees in the wreath of the Usseler Es on 7 February. More trees will be planted here in the near future. The planting is a result of the Usseler Es West zoning plan. In this zoning plan, the business zoning has been changed to agricultural and nature. The municipal council adopted this zoning plan in April 2021.
Preserving characteristic appearance
The green strips and further infill of the Es will be realised in phases. Alderman Van Houdt and Technology Base director Schuring planted the first trees. The remaining trees and plants on about 1.4 hectares of green strips will be planted in the coming period. Jurgen van Houdt: ‘It is nice that this way the historical Es will retain its characteristic appearance and the wreath will be strengthened. The bulge of the Es will remain an open area with agricultural zoning. With this, we ensure the future image with even more attention to biodiversity.’
Nature Protection Act
The trees were planted in collaboration with Technology Base because of the replanting obligation under the Nature Conservation Act. Part of the former Twenthe Air Base is under development as a business campus Technology Base. Preservation of cultural heritage and making it as nature-inclusive as possible are central to the development of Technology Base and the other subareas. Examples include mowing in a certain way (sinus mowing) to increase insect and butterfly populations and varied, climate-proof forests.
Jan Schuring, Technology Base director: ‘With the further development of the business park and Twente Airport, we cannot escape cutting down trees in some places and replanting them elsewhere. This action falls under the Nature Conservation Act for the Wooded Areas section of the province of Overijssel. With this replanting, we can contribute to nature development on the Usseler Es.’
