Space53
The drone innovation cluster Space53 has been part of Twente Airport since 1 January 2025. Twente Airport has all the preconditions for the successful development and application of unmanned systems. With the combination of high-tech knowledge and skills, facilities for testing and experimentation and intensive cooperation with governments and emergency services, Twente Airport has a unique position in the drone world.
With its vast and varied terrain and large, managed airspace, Twente Airport in the Netherlands is known as an ideal testing environment for both manned and unmanned flight operations, and is regularly used for exercises by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the National Police and the Twente Fire Service.
Experimental drones
The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) has granted State of Motion permission to test experimental drones at Twente Airport and Technology Base. This decision turns Twente Airport into a fully-fledged test location where innovative technology can be fully experimented with.
This gives Twente Airport the necessary testing space for various drone projects, such as the development of new drone monitoring technology, safety concepts and new applications for drones in European projects.
The exemption allows you as an operator or developer to save a significant amount of time. The experimental and therefore not yet certified technology can be assessed at Twente Airport to determine whether it is safe enough to test.
