Fire Brigade Twente was the first new user at Techology Base in 2008. The training site grew into Twente Safety Campus, with thousands of visitors from home and abroad every year.

"When we first came here, we immediately saw that it was like a sweet shop. The area was unused, empty buildings everywhere. Ideal for practising without bothering anyone."

Troned

Troned offers tailor-made training for firefighters, police, medical services and defence. Large numbers of firefighters come regularly to practice.

"For example, it is relatively easy to organise a so-called Mikado exercise here, where we train on rescuing victims from the debris
of a collapsed building. Preparing and clearing takes a lot of time. Here, everything can be left for the next group. At the barracks, that is not possible."

Risk Factory

Another part of the campus is the Risk Factory. This interactive education centre attracts thousands of schoolchildren from the area every year. A visit to the Risk Factory is a regular part of the grade 8 school curriculum. Pupils learn how to deal with fire-safe situations, but also follow a teaching programme on cyberbullying, for example. They broaden the concept of safety and work together with the police, University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, municipalities and Tactus addiction care.

Safety Field Lab

The Safety Field Lab is a testing ground for knowledge institutions, companies and education to develop new safety concepts and innovations. In the Safety Field Lab, practical research and various types of tests can be carried out under realistic conditions.

Work is under way on a sensor suit for the fire brigade. The company RE-liON that is developing this suit has also set up shop here, in an old aircraft hangar. The synergy within Technology Base continues. The aircraft dismantled by neighbouring AELS turn out to be perfect training objects for the police's special intervention teams.

Within Twente Safety Campus, they also cooperate with the drone innovation cluster and test centre Space53, also located at Technolgoy Base. Twente Fire Brigade is the first force in the Netherlands to be allowed to use drones for both firefighting and surveillance at Technology Base, and then also autonomous drones. They use the knowledge they gain to train colleagues from across the country.
